The first meeting of the National Scientific Council for Food Security, chaired by Minister of Agriculture Yacine El-Mahdi Oualid, marks the launch of a strategic body designed to support the modernisation of Algerian agriculture. Under the slogan "Sowing science to reap food security", this Council brings together 34 experts from complementary disciplines and is chaired by Professor Ammar Azioune. Its mission is to support public authorities through scientific research, innovation and advanced technologies to improve agricultural production, modernise food chains and prevent future crises.
The minister emphasised that food security is a major strategic issue requiring close coordination between researchers, decision-makers and economic actors. He insisted on the importance of promoting academic research under-exploited and transforming it into concrete solutions in the field. According to him, improving productivity, particularly in strategic crops such as cereals, requires modern technologies and the local development of seeds, especially hybrids, to reduce dependence on imports.
In the livestock sector, a thorough reform is deemed necessary, focusing on genetic improvement, animal production planning, and the adoption of appropriate feed, to strengthen domestic production and limit imports. The minister also mentioned the fight against agricultural losses, the need to link public aid to concrete results, and the drafting of a new agriculture law to facilitate the transition and reduce administrative constraints.
For his part, Professor Ammar Azioune presented the Council as a central scientific pillar for guiding agricultural policies. He highlighted the diversity of national expertise mobilised, including that of the diaspora, and the importance of a multidisciplinary, rigorous and ethical approach. In the face of climatic, economic and geopolitical challenges, he stressed the need for governance based on science, institutional coordination and ongoing technical monitoring to guarantee Algeria's long-term food security.
