At the 47th annual session of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) in Rome, Algeria received an award, alongside the European Union and five other countries, for its efforts to combat illegal and unregulated fishing. This award is part of Algeria's efforts to update its national legislative framework and implement its regional action plan against this phenomenon.

The meeting, which brought together 20 countries and the European Union, resulted in the adoption of 17 key decisions, including 12 binding recommendations to promote fisheries and aquaculture sustainability in the Mediterranean. These decisions include creating new protected fishing areas and establishing a network for disease surveillance in aquaculture.

The GFCM, attached to the FAO, is a regional organization that issues recommendations for developing fisheries and aquaculture in the Mediterranean and Black Seas. Algerian officials from the Ministry of Fisheries and Fisheries Productions attended the session.
