Algeria imports sardines from Tunisia

Algeria has decided to import sardines from Tunisia to meet part of the national demand and ensure adequate supplies at reasonable prices, particularly during the month of Ramadhan, when demand for sardines is traditionally high.

The price of a kilogram of sardines on the Algerian market has reached a record high, currently varying between 1,200 and 1,500 dinars. "We have examined numerous requests to import certain fish products from neighbouring countries such as Tunisia and Mauritania, with the aim of covering part of the country's needs after Algeria experienced a very difficult period, mainly linked to weather fluctuations and changes in marine currents", Abderrahmane Hentour, Director of the Ministry of Fisheries and Fisheries Productions, told the newspaper El Khabar.


Stressing that this action was part of ministerial coordination with the Ministries of Agriculture and Trade, this official said that an initial quantity of 10 tonnes of sardines from Tunisia had been imported by operators in the wilaya of Constantine and distributed to several eastern wilayas, including Constantine, Skikda, Sétif and Batna.


The same official cited a study by the Ministry of Fisheries and Fishery Production, according to which Algerian sardine production "decreases each year between the months of December and May compared to that recorded between the months of May and November, when production capacity reaches between 6,000 and 7,000 tonnes with prices stabilising", adding that "sardine production must be maintained at a level of 7,000 tonnes to guarantee price stability at around 400 to 500 dinars".
