Algeria on course to become Africa's maritime gateway

At the International Conference on the Maritime Economy held in Algiers on Monday, operators and experts pointed to improvements in Algeria's port infrastructure and logistics, positioning the country as a future maritime hub for Africa. This ambition, supported by the authorities' efforts to revitalize the maritime economy, could make Algeria a strategic transhipment hub.

Algeria is positioning itself as a potential transhipment hub due to its strategic location between Europe and Africa, supported by the trans-Saharan route between Algiers and Lagos. The government aims to diversify port use beyond Algiers and optimise port infrastructure in this context. Shipbuilding is also progressing, with fishing vessel exports on the rise. Mouloud Belaid of Amapa advocates modernising maritime regulations to meet the new demands of the sector. At the same time, Abdallah Seriai of Translog stresses the need for better port infrastructure to reduce logistics costs, which remain high.

Despite challenges such as port congestion and a declining national fleet, Algeria is pursuing maritime development to strengthen its competitiveness aiming to become a key player in the transit of goods to the Sahel and Mediterranean markets.
