Algeria is pursuing its strategy of developing renewable energies to diversify its economy and guarantee energy security in the medium and long term. At a study day on solar energy, Nacima Rachedi, Chief of Staff to the Secretary of State for Renewable Energies, highlighted the measures taken to promote clean energy sources and improve energy efficiency.

The sector action plan calls for creating an attractive economic environment for investment in renewable energies, by strengthening industrial integration, the development of local industry and public-private partnerships. Algeria is also working to update legal frameworks and develop innovative financing mechanisms to encourage start-ups and micro-enterprises in the sector.

Among current projects, a 3,000 MW solar power program via 20 new stations is under development, in addition to a 200 MW power plant in Tindouf to support the operation of the Gara Djebilet mine. Algeria is also banking on hybridizing diesel power plants with solar power in the south and developing solar sites for Sonatrach. The installed capacity of renewable energies is expected to exceed 4,000 MW.

The country plans to integrate wind power, with a 1,000 MW project at 10 sites, in partnership with the World Bank. Self-consumption of solar energy was cited as an effective solution for reducing transport costs and stimulating the creation of specialized local SMEs.

Organized by Green Energy Cluster Algeria, the meeting provided an opportunity to discuss the challenges and opportunities of renewable energies in Algeria, with recommendations for supporting investment and increasing the share of clean energies in the national energy mix.
