China's CRCC inaugurates a railway tie factory in Algeria

On November 10, the Hassi-Khebi railway tie factory in Tindouf officially began operations starting the construction phase of a mining line in western Algeria, managed by China Railway Construction Corporation Algerie (CRCC).

Several personalities attended the inauguration ceremony, including the wali of Tindouf, Mustapha Dahou, and CRCC's director, Xu Huaxiang, who expressed his gratitude for the joint efforts to make the project a success.

Xu Huaxiang underlined CRCC Algeria's honour to contribute to the economic and social development of the region and promised to implement the project with rigour and on time, to create a model of win-win cooperation between China and Algeria.

The railway project involves the construction of a 575km line connecting Tindouf, Béchar and Gara Djebilet and is a key element of China-Algeria cooperation supported by the Belt and Road Initiative.

Dong Lin, CRCC's General Manager for North Africa, explained that the tie factory is the first in the Saharan desert and is expected to produce 1.2 million ties for the rail project.

The factory has two automated production lines capable of producing up to 3,000 sleepers a day. It is also working to integrate both Chinese and European technical standards while adapting to local specifications.

The factory currently employs 152 Algerian workers, who receive regular training to improve their skills and ensure workplace safety.

Algeria launched an ambitious project to develop its rail network, including creating a 950 km line to transport iron ore from Gara Djebilet to Béchar. Work on the first section began at the end of November 2023, with progress monitored positively.
