According to the Ministry's press release, at this meeting, which took place in the presence of private and public importers, the two ministers assessed the import system for red and white meats implemented since the beginning of October 2023.

The twin objectives of sufficient quantities and reasonable prices

They also presented the new approach adopted by the public authorities to import and supply the market with various types of meat (beef, mutton and chicken) in sufficient quantities and at reasonable prices.

In this respect, the Ministers confirmed that this system has been put in place until the year 2025, while retaining the same advantages, namely: low customs duties, elimination of VAT, etc., so that the import process will continue for red meats of various types (vacuum-packed meats, carcasses, etc.) as well as for livestock intended for slaughter and fattening.

Reviewing import licensing procedures

While confirming that meat imports will continue throughout 2025, the two ministers also announced a review of the way meat import licenses are allocated, so that importers commit to importing the quantities granted.

In addition to supplying the market and stabilizing prices for these products, the press release states that “this approach aims to review the way import licenses are used by operators, by setting in advance the deadlines for their implementation in line with the objectives set by the public authorities and which are proportionate to market needs”.
