One million olive trees to be planted by the end of the year: Algeria continues to develop its olive oil production

Algeria is consolidating its position in the top club of olive oil producers. One million olive trees should be planted by year-end. The government aims to extend this crop to desert areas, drawing heavily on groundwater.

Algeria is implementing an ambitious olive cultivation program by planting one million olive trees by the end of 2024 and expanding to one million hectares of olive groves by 2030., cultivation in desert areas is included, which represents a notable shift for a country traditionally focused on Mediterranean coastal areas. With 443,000 hectares of olive groves and over 65 million productive trees, annual production exceeds 9 million quintals of olives. Algeria is the world's 4th largest producer of table olives and 7th largest producer of olive oil. With government support, the sector aims to produce 100 million litres of olive oil by 2030, increasing food self-sufficiency and optimising agricultural resources, even in arid areas.
