Algeria is preparing to begin offshore hydrocarbon exploitation in 2026 by launching the first international call for expressions of interest. An area of 100,000 km² has been identified as potentially containing significant offshore natural gas reserves. Since 2018, Sonatrach, in partnership with European groups Eni and TotalEnergies, has been carrying out exploration work in the central-eastern and western regions of the country, with positive results. The interest in offshore exploration goes back more than 15 years, with several exploration permits issued.

The results of these efforts are expected to be encouraging by 2024. Algeria plans to strengthen its offshore activities with the arrival of Gazprom, which has expressed interest in partnership projects. Now, offshore exploration is a priority for Sonatrach as part of its strategy to renew gas resources. Although this activity is not an immediate priority, it is an important first step in developing the offshore sector, which is costly but crucial to the country's future energy needs. The official launch of the calls for expressions of interest is planned for 2026.
