Olive oil: production of over 13 million litres expected in Béjaïa

The current olive-growing season in Béjaïa promises to be fruitful with production forecast at over 13 million litres of olive oil. This forecast, communicated by the Department of Agricultural Services (DAS), exceeds the 12 million litres initially envisaged, thanks to encouraging yields, particularly in the east of the wilaya.

Olive oil production: promising figures for Béjaïa

The province of Béjaïa has harvested 111,000 quintals of olives on 8,723 hectares. This includes 480 quintals of table olives and 110,456 quintals of olive oil.

The processing of 37,189 quintals of olives has produced 7,132 litres of oil, with an average yield of 19.18 litres per quintal, a significant improvement on the previous season when some orchards reported yields as low as 6 litres per quintal.

Success factors and key areas

Yields as high as 25 litres per quintal were recorded in the main olive-growing areas of the Soummam Valley, including Sidi Aich, Seddouk, Akbou, Ighil Ali and Tazmalt. September rains revitalised olive trees and improved fruit quality after a prolonged drought.

A major olive-growing area in Algeria

With 5.1 million olive trees on 52,000 hectares and 400 olive mills, Béjaïa remains a cornerstone of the Algerian olive industry. The harvest, which will continue until January 2025, is a source of hope for producers, helping to stabilise the olive oil supply on the market.
