19% increase in honey production in Boumerdès

A 19% increase was recorded in honey production (all varieties combined) during the 2023/2024 agricultural season in Boumerdès, compared with the previous campaign, reported M'rabet Zahra, head of the statistics department at the Directorate of Agricultural Services (DSA), on Tuesday.

"This year, honey production was estimated at 1,210 qx, compared to only 1,017 qx during the last campaign," she stated to the APS, on the sidelines of the 9th edition of the National Honey and Beekeeping Products Fair, held Sunday in downtown Boumerdes.

She explained this increase in honey production to the rise in hive yield, which went from 2.7 kg last season to 3.5 kg per hive this current season. Additionally, there was a reduction in the number of fires and favourable climatic conditions during the beekeeping and honey harvest period (July and August).

According to several beekeepers and honey producers participating in this event, this improvement in production was accompanied by a "certain stabilization of honey prices," currently fluctuating between 3,000 and 5,000 DA/kg.

Thirty exhibitors, including beekeepers and operators from eight (8) wilayas, are taking part in this honey fair, which runs until December 3.
