Ghardaïa: Over 2,000 hectares planted with durum wheat

More than 2,040 hectares of land in the wilaya of Ghardaïa will be devoted to durum wheat this season, following an agreement signed between some thirty-grain growers in the wilaya and the Laghouat Cooperative for Cereals and Pulses (CCLS), the local Department of Agricultural Services (DSA) announced on Saturday.

The province of Ghardaïa has implemented a strategy to encourage and intensify the cultivation of durum wheat to meet the population needs and reduce cereal imports.

Agreements have been made with cereal farmers to support them with fertiliser and seeds, and to collect all cereal production at the end of the campaign.

All the conditions have been met to meet the growing demand for fertiliser and seeds from cereal farmers in Ghardaïa, with an annual increase in sown area of 25%.

This year, the area planted with pivot-irrigated cereals has been increased thanks to continuous efforts to raise farmers' awareness of the importance of this strategic sector.

At the end of the 2024/2025 campaign, cereal production is expected to exceed 81,000 quintals, compared with more than 57,000 quintals produced on 1,486 hectares last season.
