At the meeting, held at the head office of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Minister was attended by the Algerian Ambassador to Italy, the Chairman and CEO of the Sonelgaz Group and the Commissioner for Nuclear Energy (COMENA). It was co-chaired by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi and brought together politicians, scientists, researchers, specialist companies and investors.
The main objective was to exchange views on strategies to accelerate the development and testing of fusion energy. Discussions focused on key issues such as political and financial frameworks, technological progress, commercialization, and international cooperation to develop this promising technology to provide low-carbon energy to meet the world's growing energy needs.
Minister Arkab underlined the recent scientific advances in fusion research and the growing global interest in the technology. He stated that fusion energy could provide reliable, safe and clean energy solutions with far less environmental impact than traditional fossil fuels, due to its many advantages.
Algeria's commitment to the development of thermonuclear fusion
Arkab reaffirmed Algeria's commitment to a sustainable energy transition and expressed the country's interest in launching a fusion energy pilot project. He underlined Algeria's desire to become a key player in developing this cutting-edge technology and to strengthen its national capabilities, especially by developing local human resources in this field.
The Minister underlined that Algeria considers fusion energy a low-carbon energy source with enormous potential to provide modern and sustainable energy solutions. He also stressed the importance of diversifying energy sources, particularly through renewable energy and hydrogen, areas in which Algeria plans to increase its use in the coming years.
The Energy Minister insisted on strengthening international cooperation and partnerships, to meet the technological challenges of nuclear fusion technology. “African regions lack access to energy, and nuclear fusion energy represents a promising field for applying these innovative energy solutions. Algeria supports the efforts of the International Atomic Energy Agency to facilitate technical cooperation and international scientific exchanges,” he added.
