Energy: Algeria did not deliver LNG to Spain in July

news-detail

The Spanish Government, led by Pedro Sanchez, reversed its position on the question of Western Sahara last March by supporting the Moroccan autonomy plan for this occupied territory. Algeria decided on 8 June to suspend the 2002 Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Good Neighbourhood with Spain.

Algeria has also decided to freeze the foreign trade bank domiciliation transactions with Spain. Although the energy sector is not affected, with Algeria and Spain being bound by gas supply contracts via the Medgaz gas pipeline, even this sector has finally been affected by the diplomatic crisis between the two Mediterranean neighbours.

Indeed, the data available for July 2022 show a decrease in natural gas deliveries from Algeria to Spain when deliveries of LNG (liquefied natural gas) stopped altogether.

According to data from the Spanish body responsible for strategic hydrocarbon reserves ‘CORES’, Spanish imports of Algerian natural gas have fallen by almost half compared to July 2021.
