Developing forage crops in El-Meniaa: towards food self-sufficiency

During his visit to El-Meniaa, the Minister of Agriculture announced an initiative to encourage triticale cultivation as an alternative to forage corn in collaboration with the Sonatrach group. The aim is to achieve self-sufficiency in forage crops while boosting meat and milk production.

Support for farmers
The Ministry is committed to supporting farmers and promoters by facilitating investment in this sector, particularly through the purchase of crops via the Algerian Interprofessional Cereals Office (OAIC).

Saharan resources
El-Meniaa, with its fertile soil and abundant water resources, has been identified as a key region for the President's food security program implementation. Corn development poles will also be created to meet local needs for subsidized cow's milk.

Promising agricultural projects
The Minister visited several farms, including:

The Kaddour Benhamouda farm in Hassi-Lefhal is dedicated to strategic crops over 1,700 hectares.
The Khirat Bladi farm, specializing in potato seed production over 1,000 hectares.

The progress made in these projects bears witness to the region's agricultural potential and the importance of intensifying seed production to ensure the sustainability of these crops.
