Availability of medicines: Algeria establishes a monitoring observatory

Yesterday, the Minister of Pharmaceutical Industry, Mr Ouacim Kouidri, appointed the members of the new observatory for monitoring the availability of pharmaceutical products. The role of the observatory, chaired by researcher Bouchra Bouhannache, will be to ensure the “regular supply” of pharmaceutical products, as well as to ‘anticipate’ potential shortages in the country's healthcare facilities and pharmacies. The minister described this as a “strategic” mission.

The creation of the Health Security Observatory is a key institutional achievement, bringing together the pharmaceutical industry, health, and trade sectors, as well as trade unions and consumer associations, to rigorously monitor the availability of medicines, anticipate distribution imbalances, and propose actions to avoid crises. Chaired by Bouchra Bouhannache, the Observatory will be responsible for alerting the authorities in the event of shortages and setting up a list of relevant products, while ensuring real-time monitoring in pharmacies and healthcare establishments. Supported by Snapo, it meets pharmacists' expectations for rapid intervention. Minister Ouacim Kouidri also reassured that the fire at the Biocare factory in El-Tarf will not affect market supply.
