“Becoming Africa’s 1st Exporter”: New ambitions for the pharmaceutical industry

That's what the industry data shows. In a few decades, Algeria has managed to make a considerable advance by becoming one of the main pharmaceutical producers in Africa. The policy of banning the import of locally manufactured pharmaceuticals adopted since 2008 by executive order has worked. 

Whereas neighbouring countries with a pharmaceutical industry dating from the 1950s cover only 50% to 53% of their local market needs, like Egypt, Algeria’s 200 manufacturing units have covered 70% of the local market’s needs in generic medicines. 

An industry with a financial value of $2.6 billion, which “is already significant,” Kerrar said. 

As a result, the vice president of the Council for Economic Renewal noted that Algeria “can really become a major player in the export of pharmaceutical products if the conditions are met.” 

This ambition was recently expressed by the President of the Republic during his visit to the exhibition organized as part of the Entrepreneurship Days.
