Strategic development of Algeria's chemical industry: towards greater self-sufficiency and competitiveness

It's irrational that Algeria, an oil-producing and exporting country, should continue to import certain raw materials, such as plastics.


This is why, according to Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, Ali Aoun, it is imperative to develop this sector of the chemical industry, in order to meet national needs on the one hand, and reduce the import bill for basic chemical products on the other.


It is also important to stress that structural, institutional and regulatory reforms, combined with investment by the State and companies, have enabled the rapid emergence of industrial production, despite the climate of international scarcity.


According to Abdelkader Sellami, an expert in fiscal economics, "the chemical industry in Algeria has probably got its strategic development plan right, and should serve as a spur to an industrial sector that must play a leading role in anchoring Algeria to a new growth model".


"The strategic plan, adopted by the public authorities, aims to strengthen and upgrade production facilities, to boost productivity, promote domestic production by ACS subsidiaries, and increase their market share", he added that "this policy is also aimed at economic integration, with the launch each year of new import-substitute products, starting with the simplest industries and leading to diversified industrial production".
