Start of coffee marketing at capped prices

The Ministry of Trade and Export Promotion has begun distributing quantities of subsidized coffee on the market in application of the price cap decision.

The Director of Market Regulation at the Ministry of Trade and Export Promotion, Ahmed Mokrani, said in a statement on public television that the Ministry had taken all the necessary steps to begin the gradual implementation of the executive decree setting the maximum consumer price for coffee.

He added that the ministry had started injecting quantities of subsidized coffee into the wholesale distribution chain, to market them to retail stores at regulated prices.

According to article 2 of executive decree n° 24-279 of August 20, 2024, setting the ceiling price of coffee for consumption and the capped profit margins on imports as well as distribution, at the wholesale and retail stages, has just been published in the Official Journal n° 57, the ceiling prices for coffee, all taxes included, for consumption, are set as follows: the kilogram of green, roasted or ground coffee « arabica » is set at 1250 dinars and the kilogram of green, roasted or ground coffee « robusta » is set at 1000 dinars.

The profit margin applicable to the importation of green coffee intended for resale is capped at 3%, calculated based on the customs value, as stipulated in Article 3 of the text. Article 4 provides that the profit margin applicable to products from imported green coffee intended for processing is capped at 4%, calculated based on the cost price.
