Creation of 60 SMEs to promote forestry professions

“It is planned that a participatory mechanism will be set up to manage the three sites through the creation of 60 small and medium-sized enterprises,” said Ikan, pointing out that some 20 institutions have been created for each site, across the forests of Beni Idir (Jijel), Taourirt Ighil (Béjaïa) and Hafir (Tlemcen).

Ikan said that women will make up 300% of these institutions. According to Knight Ikan, the forest resource assessment phase will be implemented in cooperation with associations concerned with forest conservation and promoting forest products. This will be done by creating small and medium-sized enterprises to exploit cork, non-wood forest materials and aromatic and medicinal plants.

In this context, the General Forestry Directorate has launched an awareness-raising campaign targeting forest residents, associations, and women, in particular, to encourage local residents to form associations and cooperatives, promote aromatic and medicinal plants and revive the cork industry.

The first two phases of the "Rehabilitation and Development of Sustainable Landscapes for Cork Oak Forest Production in Algeria" project have been completed. This is part of a partnership between the Directorate General of Forests and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
