Port congestion: ships diverted to other ports

The Ministry of Transport has instructed ships to be rerouted to other ports if the destination port faces congestion problems. This measure was taken following the “overcrowding” experienced by the Algiers port not long ago.

The Ministry of Transport, through its Direction Générale de la Marine Marchande et des Ports (General Directorate of Merchant Marine and Ports), has decided to redirect ships to other ports in the event of congestion at their port of destination. Consignees are now responsible for notifying shipowners to divert vessels to a port other than the one initially planned, in the event of congestion. This measure particularly concerns the port of Algiers, which regularly encounters congestion problems, but also applies to other Algerian ports.

In addition, the shipping company CMA CGM introduced a "Port Congestion Surcharge" (PCS) of 150 euros per 20-foot container for goods coming to Algeria from northern Europe due to congestion in the ports of Algiers, Bejaïa, Skikda and Oran.

The President of the Republic also raised this issue at a meeting of the Council of Ministers in June 2024, where he called for developing a new strategy to manage ports, to be presented to the government as soon as possible.
