Trade: Pharmacists authorised to sell medical equipment and parapharmaceutical products

Samy Kolli, Director General of Regulation and Organisation of Activities at the Ministry of Trade, has stated that the current Pharmacy Code entered in the Trade Register (101 602) still authorises pharmacists to sell a list of products by virtue of the 1995 decree establishing the list of goods authorised for sale in pharmacies, adding that the Ministry had not prohibited dispensing pharmacists from marketing medical equipment and parapharmaceutical products.

"The current code for pharmacy activities entered in the trade register (101 602) authorises pharmacists to sell a list of products under Order No. 52 of 10 July 1995 setting out the list of goods authorised for sale in pharmacies", said Mr Kolli in a statement to APS, confirming the possibility of "marketing medical and hygiene products and those intended for infants and children, as well as beauty and body hygiene products".


To add the words "sale of medical equipment or parapharmaceutical products" to code 101 602, "pharmacists should submit a request to the commission responsible for updating the nomenclature of economic activities subject to registration in the commercial register, or lodge a request with the Ministry of Health", he explained, adding that the Algerian National Union of Pharmacists (SNAPO) has the right to make proposals in this area.

Regarding the ban on pharmacists providing certain health-related services, such as medical tests and examinations, Mr Kolli explained that this is "legally founded", in accordance with "a letter from the Ministry of Health in 2015, setting out the list of activities ineligible for registration on the commercial register, including that of medical test laboratories, which prevents a trader registered on the commercial register, such as a pharmacist, from carrying out this activity".
