Thirty-four (34) applications to take part in the 2024 bluefin tuna fishing season, due to be launched on May 26, have been submitted by shipowners to local fisheries and aquaculture directorates, announced Aomar Ouchelli, Deputy Director of Major and Specialized Fisheries at the Ministry of Fisheries and Fisheries Productions.

These applications follow the publication of the notice of participation in this campaign, in accordance with the provisions of the decree of February 24, 2022 setting the terms and conditions for bluefin tuna fishing by vessels flying the national flag, Mr. Ouchelli told APS.

He added that at the next meeting of the ministerial commission in charge of preparations for the bluefin tuna fishing season, these applications will be examined before the shipowners are allocated their individual quotas from the national bluefin tuna quota, set this year at 2,046 tonnes, 23 tonnes more than for the 2023 season.

Mr Ouchelli also pointed out that, as part of the preparations, 34 fisheries inspectors would be appointed for the 2024 campaign, noting that once the list of inspectors had been drawn up, briefings on the recommendations for this type of fishing, in accordance with current national and international regulations, would be given to the staff accompanying the vessels.

Preparations are also underway to draw up a list of trainees from among the young lieutenants of the fishing establishments under his supervision who will be taking part in this campaign, he noted, assuring us that this event constitutes "a learning workshop for the trainees" which will enable them to familiarize themselves with the fishing operation and its technical and logistical environment, in particular.

Mr. Ouchelli also noted that the 2024 bluefin tuna fishing season is marked by the registration with the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) of an Algerian tuna fattening farm, planned for the port of Honaïne in the wilaya of Tlemcen, in a first that greatly opens up the prospects of the tuna industry in Algeria.
