Dental anaesthetics: Four companies to begin production in 2026
The Minister of Pharmaceutical Industry, Ouacim Kouidri, announced on Thursday before the National People's Assembly (APN) that four companies will begin local production of dental anaesthetics starting next year.
The Algerian government is pursuing a strategy aimed at ensuring the continued availability of essential medicines and reducing dependence on imports, particularly in the wake of recent disruptions. This approach includes supporting local production, combating speculation, and implementing industrial projects, including the local manufacture of dental anaesthesia products starting in 2026.
In this context, the public group Saidal plans to launch pharmaceutical production units in three southern provinces: Ouled Djellal, Ouargla, and Tamanrasset. These projects are part of a roadmap to achieve pharmaceutical sovereignty, particularly
through the manufacture of raw materials for strategic medicines (diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, antibiotics).
The Ministry of Industry and the AAPI are collaborating to facilitate investment in inland and southern regions to create jobs. In Ouled Djellal, discussions are underway to identify a site that meets Saidal's criteria.
The Algerian pharmaceutical sector comprises around 200 companies, several of which are venturing into the production of raw materials, a sector that is still rare in Africa and the Middle East. Minister Kouidri highlighted a notable sector development, with 233 production facilities covering 82% of national needs and a significant decline in pharmaceutical imports between 2022 and 2024.
