Reporting to the Ministry of Public Works, the Port Infrastructure Authority is responsible for conducting studies and implementing new or expanded projects. It is currently managing two major projects of vital importance to the national economy: the Annaba port expansion, linked to the development of phosphates, and the expansion of the port of Djen Djen in Jijel, the largest port in Algeria in terms of draught.
Project details:
Port of Annaba: Construction of a quay for phosphate ore to be processed at Souk Ahras for export. This quay is essential for the exploitation of the country's mineral resources.
Port of Djen Djen: Initially a mineral port for the Bellara steel complex, with a first extension for a container terminal (to be completed by the end of 2025) and a second to extend the quay by 3,000 linear metres. The port will be able to handle 5 million containers and 25 million tonnes of goods per year, making it a Mediterranean hub.
Project progress:
Port of Annaba: Work started in March with a completion date of 2026. Preparatory works and feasibility studies have been completed.
Port of Djen Djen: A national and international tender for detailed studies has been launched and bidders are expected.
National strategy:
The government has approved a national port development strategy that aims to double port capacity by 2035 to support non-hydrocarbon exports. Projects include improving logistics infrastructure to reduce transport costs and delays.
Large vessels:
The expansion of the port of Djen Djen will allow it to accommodate the world's largest container ships, while the port of Annaba will be able to accommodate large phosphate and mineral carriers with adapted draughts.
