Algérie-Eco: How is the beverage sector in Algeria doing at the moment?

MHamani:
The beverage industry was reorganized in 2023 by implementing three (03) Algerian technical regulations (RTA) promulgated in 2022 in inter-ministerial decrees.

These regulations, published in the Journal Officiel, aim to establish standards for juices, nectars, soft drinks and cheese products,  to clean up the market and guarantee product compliance with national and international standards. In response to these new requirements, producers have reduced the amount of added sugar to 105 g/litre.

Beverage consumption is expected to rise in 2024, supported by growing demand despite inflation. However, the sector has not seen any significant price increases, except for raw material costs such as PET. Consumers are opting increasingly for bottled water and fruit juices, abandoning soft drinks.

Algerian beverages are making inroads in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. The incentives provided for exporters in the draft finance law for 2025 are welcomed, although APAB is awaiting the final version of this text to assess its impact.
