The competition is aimed at holders of innovative African ideas and projects in the various sectors of agriculture, agri-food, fishing and aquaculture, explained its initiators at the launch ceremony. The trophy for this year's event, involving 39 Algerian and African start-ups, is named “Trophée Sid Ahmed Ferroukhi”, in tribute to the former Minister of Agriculture, who passed away in June 2022.

In his speech, Mr. Oualid underlined his department's interest in young innovators in agriculture, pointing out that over 200 certified start-ups are active in this sector.

In addition to providing support and guidance for start-ups, the Minister pointed out that his department is also responsible for financing the micro-enterprises of young promoters in the fields of agriculture and aquaculture.

Projects submitted by competing candidates will be evaluated by a committee of experts, before the results are announced at the 22nd Sipsa-Filaha and Africa Food Export trade show, scheduled for May 20 to 23 at the Palais des expositions (Pins maritimes-Alger). The Panafrican Food debate-Algiers event will be held on May 20 and 21, under the theme “Building a food co-prosperity in Africa”.

Organized in partnership with the Institut sénégalais de recherche agricole (Senegalese agricultural research institute), this meeting will provide an opportunity to reflect on joint action and exchange experiences between the various experts in order to meet the challenges of climate change and ensure food security for all the region's populations, explained GRFI vice-president Brahim Zitouni.
