Activation of a fishing protocol with Mauritania: Algeria gains access to the Atlantic Ocean

Algeria has gained access to the Atlantic Ocean fishery resources thanks to the implementation, in partnership with Mauritania, of a fishing protocol authorizing it to exploit Mauritania's rich territorial waters.

The fisheries cooperation agreement between Algeria and Mauritania, initialled in 2022 in Nouakchott, officially came into force in Algiers at the end of a meeting of the Joint Technical Commission, attended by the two countries' agriculture ministers. The agreement marks the relaunch of a partnership dating back to 2013, which has now been extended to include aquaculture, scientific research and shipbuilding and repair. In particular, it provides for the exploitation of seven deep-sea fishing licences, representing more than 31,000 tonnes.

The initiative is part of a wider strategy aimed at making Algeria a major player in the fisheries sector in Africa, with fourteen agreements already signed to date. Priorities for 2025 include the development of freshwater aquaculture (tilapia, sea bream), support for financing through banking partnerships, and the modernisation of the shipbuilding sector. While this strategy promises to improve the supply of fish and generate positive economic spin-offs, its impact on Algerian consumers has yet to be fully realised.
