Acquisition of railway equipment: SNTF to invest DZD 378 billion

The Société Nationale des Transports Ferroviaires (SNTF) (National Rail Transport Company) has drawn up a ‘wide-ranging’ program to acquire various types of railway equipment, to meet the requirements of current and future projects to extend the national network and improve connections between wilayas, SNTF management control director Sofiane Aibeche stated in an interview with APS.

As part of its 2035 strategy, the SNTF has launched a major investment program worth 378 billion dinars. The first phase, with a budget of 138 billion dinars, includes the purchase of 400 passenger coaches and locomotives. An international tender has been launched for the purchase of six autorails and 12 multi-purpose locomotives to meet the growing demand for passenger and freight transport.

The company is also improving railway security by installing CCTV cameras, improving the customer experience with automatic ticket machines, and modernizing infrastructure, including the rehabilitation of 82 stations and the redesign of eight major stations. A unified ticketing project will integrate different modes of public transport in Algiers, while an online reservation service will be introduced for long-distance routes.

In 2023, the SNTF will transport over 5 million tons of goods, a figure expected to increase by 14% by the end of 2024. These initiatives are part of a wider modernisation and digitalization effort to support local industry and reduce dependence on imports.
