Algeria is betting on a dynamic revival of the tourism sector through the completion of 582 of the 2,562 approved projects currently underway, which will generate almost 70,000 additional beds by 2025. The aim is to increase accommodation capacity from 140,000 to over 210,000 beds, thereby reducing the accommodation deficit and making prices more affordable to encourage local tourism.
Faced with competition from destinations such as Tunisia, the government has introduced several incentives: support for investors, improved training, development of spas and thalassotherapy projects, with a target of 6,000 new beds per year to reach 200,000 beds by 2030.
The Algerian Investment Promotion Agency (AAPI) and the National Tourism Land Agency (ANFT) are working to optimise tourism land by developing expansion zones, legalising them and creating new sites, particularly on the coast and in the Hauts Plateaux.
Innovation plays a key role, with start-ups offering digital solutions to promote tourism in Algeria, including online booking and the creation of personalized tours. The Hauts Plateaux have been identified as a strategic pole for developing, with strong cultural and natural potential that remains underexploited.
To conclude, the success of sustainable, competitive tourism depends on improved management and coordination among public, private and civil players. Support for investment, access to credit and the introduction of travel insurance are seen as essential to structuring the sector and making it a strong lever for economic growth.
