Mobile payment: A 71% increase in transactions in the first quarter of 2024.

Mobile payment transactions have seen a 71% increase during the first quarter of 2024, according to data published by the Economic Interest Group for Electronic Payments (GIE Monétique).

In terms of figures, the same source specifies that mobile payments have exceeded 12.5 million transactions during the first quarter of the current year, compared to 7.6 million transactions during the same period in 2023.


The value of mobile payment transactions exceeded 9.3 billion DZD in the first three months of the current year, compared to approximately 5.5 billion DZD during the first quarter of the previous year.


As for mobile money transfers (between clients of the same financial institution), they amounted, for the same period, to more than 7.2 million transactions, with a value exceeding 106 billion DZD, representing an increase of 140% and 187% respectively compared to the previous year.


An 18% increase in internet payments


Regarding internet payments, there has been an increase in line with the growth in the number of e-commerce merchants, reaching 510 operators compared to 337 e-commerce merchants in the first quarter of the previous year, according to the GIE Monétique report.


Thus, the number of transactions during the first quarter of the current year reached 3.2 million transactions (up 18%) with a total value of 9.3 billion DZD (up 63%), spread across telecommunications, transportation, insurance, bills, administrative services, services, sale of goods, and sports and leisure.


As for transactions via electronic payment terminals (EPTs), they totaled more than 1.3 million transactions (up 55%) with a value exceeding 10 billion DZD (up 49%), alongside an increase in the number of terminals to 53,756 devices, up 4,726 EPTs compared to the first quarter of last year.
