Italy
is trying to strengthen its energy security and seek alternatives to Russian
supplies after Moscow’s attack on Ukraine.
Algeria
is an increasingly important source of gas for the third largest economy in the
European Union. The Prime Minister will visit Algiers on Sunday and Monday.
Italy
will have enough gas to go through the winter of 2023-24 without interruption
if it can increase imports from Algeria, said Claudio Descalzi, Managing
Director of Eni SpA, according to the same source.
He
previously said that Algeria would supply 38% of Italy’s gas needs this year,
as much as Russia did before shutting off flows to Europe in retaliation for
war sanctions. Prior to the invasion, Algeria was Europe’s largest gas supplier
after Russia and Norway.
It
sends both liquefied natural gas and channeled flows to the continent. Meloni’s
predecessor, Mario Draghi, worked last year to improve relations with Algeria
and other African energy producers such as Egypt.
