Importing over 1.1 million tons of corn to meet growing demand in the domestic market
ALGIERS- The National Office for Animal Feed (ONAB) has planned to import additional quantities of corn, estimated at 1.15 million tons, until next February, to boost market supply levels for this product and meet the current high demand, according to a statement issued Monday by the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries. a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries.
The ONAB has begun importing 1,150,000 tonnes of maize during the period from 28 December to February 2026, after noting a shortage in the market supply of this product and following a meeting between the minister responsible for the sector and representatives of the poultry industry, during which all necessary measures were taken for the import, storage and distribution of maize used in the production of animal feed, to ensure a regular and continuous supply to the domestic market and to guarantee its availability and market stability."
The operation is proceeding according to a specific schedule, with the receipt of 250,000 tonnes of maize between December 28 and January 1, 2026, via the ports of Oran, Algiers, Skikda and Bejaïa.
Another 500,000 tonnes will be received in January 2026. An additional 400,000 tonnes are expected during February 2026, according to the same source.
Given the quantities already imported, currently in transit and scheduled for delivery, the Ministry has reassured all professionals, particularly those in the poultry sector, that sufficient maize quantities will be available on the domestic market, calling for regular supply practices and collective responsibility to maintain market balance.
It was also decided to build up a reserve stock of maize to avoid any future disruption to its supply, given the recurrence of this situation every year, the statement added.
The ministry emphasises that it has mobilised all resources to ensure regular monitoring of the corn supply market to meet the national market's demand for this raw material, which accounts for 80 food intended for the poultry industry.
