The Protocol was signed
by the Maghreb Committee on Electricity (COMELEC), the Mediterranean Energy
Observatory (OME), the Association of Mediterranean Transmission System
Operators for Electricity (Med-TSO) and the Mediterranean Association of
National Energy Control Agencies (MEDENER).
This was done during the
joint conference on ‘electricity interconnections in the Mediterranean as a
factor for regional integration and a catalyst for the energy transition’.
The Algiers Protocol was
signed by Med-TSO General Secretary Angelo Ferrante, COMELEC SG Khaled Nouasri,
OME SG Nour Elhouda Allal, and MEDENER SG Roberta Boniotti.
Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab,
stated that the energy transition was a priority objective, based on the
development of new and renewable energies and the taking of effective measures
to control our energy consumption, in order to preserve natural resources for
future generations.
In this respect, the development of hydrogen has been included among the
priorities of the Algerian government’s program and a national strategy for the
development of this sector is being finalized. However, the development of
hydrogen will require a convergence of several factors, including the
establishment of the regulatory and institutional framework, the preparation of
human capital, the transfer of technology and financing, but above all the
creation of a transparent and competitive market.
