Electricity consumption tripled between 2011 and 2025: Energy transition is urgent!

Algeria is facing an alarming increase in electricity demand, driven by successive heat waves and the widespread use of air conditioners. Figures from the Commission for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CEREFE) support this.

Faced with a 60% increase in energy consumption between 2011 and 2024, Algeria is sounding the alarm. In July 2025, a historic peak of 20,628 MW was reached, primarily due to heatwaves and the widespread use of air conditioners. Although the 26 GW production capacity, 99% of which is provided by natural gas, covers demand and allows for exports to Tunisia, the current model is showing its limitations: 75% of energy is absorbed by non-productive uses.

To reverse this trend, the government is focusing on a rationalisation strategy (LED lighting, LPG, insulation, and audits) and aims for a 10% reduction by 2030. The country is also accelerating the development of renewable energies: solar (15-GW target in 2035), wind, biogas, and the local solar panel industry. In a context of climate change and future carbon taxes, these efforts are as much economic as they are environmental. Algeria aims to modernize its industries to ensure energy security and reduce emissions.
